Please, be patient with us!

Putting all of this information together takes a long time, and we're working hard to make sure we're providing you with the most accurate, up to date information. Our ideas for this page are big, which means it's going to require partnerships, working together, and patience while we collect everything and put it all together. If we don't have information about a specific animal you're looking for, contact us and we'll help you find whatever information you're looking for. We are building a very large network of information here, so we will hopefully have all of the pets covered - at some point!

If you are a professional in an animal field, a long time keeper, or an expert in any way, and want to help us with this project, please contact us or fill out our information form! We'd love to work together to provide the best information possible - we can't do this without you!

This page is organized in a unique fashion - we want everything to be as accessible as possible, so we have organized this page in a way that most peoples train of thought would work when thinking about what type of pet to bring home. This is why some listings are more broad than others! But keep in mind, more information can be found by clicking through each page. If anything seems confusing or out of place, let us know and we'll consider reorganizing in a way that makes sense to more people.

How to digest this information

We want to provide enough information that you can get a full understanding of each species youre looking into without offering an overwhelming amount of information all at once. For this reason, you will have to click through each profile to find more details about specific animals. Some of the information we provide may look like you won't be able to understand it - but we promise, you can! Below, we've provided a bit of a cheat sheet so you can understand what some shorthand means. if there's anything you see on our pages that you still don't understand, contact us and well add those descriptions to this page so others can have an easier time navigating our site!

IUCN

The IUCN Red List is an international organization that describes itself as follows: "Established in 1964, the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of Threatened Species has evolved to become the world’s most comprehensive information source on the global extinction risk status of animal, fungus and plant species." This organization lists species based on their risk level - Least Concern (LC), Near Threatened (NT), Vulnerable (VU), Endangered (EN), Critically Endangered (CR), Extinct in the Wild (EW), and Extinct (EX). We provide this information in our animal profiles because we believe if we are going to keep animals as pets, we should care about their conservation. All listings on our site have been updated in 2025. To learn more about the IUCN click here, and to search for species in their database, use their scientific names!

Lifespans

Citations

All lifespans provided under animal profiles are based on the expected/average captive lifespan of that animal.

Our work here is collaborative and rooted in evidence based research. While reading through some of our information, you may come across some in text citations. It will look like this (Carissa Silet, 2025). All it means is that the information stated in that sentence came from that source! It does not refer to the entire page nor the entire paragraph, usually. Just the one statement before the source is listed. It might also look like this (Milk and Honey Sanctuary, 2025). This means the same thing, but it was a statement from an organization, not just one individual person. Sources from peer reviewed scientific journals or other professional published works will look slightly different, and may look something like this (Silet et al., 2025). Et al is used when citing papers with more than three authors, so this citation would mean "Silet and others, 2025". Contributors and everyone cited in text will be at the bottom of each webpage if you are interested to know more about them.
